By Christopher Clark
The Diadora Gamma Carbinio is the most expensive shin guard on the planet by far. I actually purchased this shinguard, because of it's wrap around form factor that protects the calf as well as the shin. Let me tell you that it works. I have taken hundreds of blows with these guards from the front and the side and can barely feel a thing because of the way that the carbon fiber disperses the impact force. On more than one occassion my wife has cringed after hearing a loud crack when an opponents kick made contact with my shin. With most guards, all but the most determined players will go down and cry out in pain. However, these little jewels take the pounding so that your shins and calves don't have to. These guards are not without their faults but overall, they are the best guards I've ever owned. I'm confident that I would not have suffered a host of bone injuries and calf muscle injuries if these guards were around when I played in high-school and at the state-team level.Pros:1. Extremely strong: The carbon fiber does an incredible job of taking the impact force and dispercing it. I barely feel a thing with someone makes contact with the guard.2. Light and Thin: The carbon fiber guard makes them very light and thin. I've been stopped by refs to ensure that I am actually wearing a guard.3. Big: This guard is both tall and wide. If you are a player that likes a minimal shin guard, then this guard is not for you, but if you are player that typically takes a beating from players trying to catch up with you, then I would consider this guard.4. Calf protection: The wrap around feature protects the calf from both the left and right side.Cons:1. The guard slides down easily. It will dig into your ankle if it is not secured with a shinguard sleeve and athletic tape.2. The carbon fiber will break up over time. This is not so much a con as much as a sign of wear and tear. I've happily used this guard for 3 years. It's now time to get a 2nd pair as the first pair has done it's duty and is ready to retire.
