best iPod clock radio you can buy - great sound, great radio, compatible with new iPods and iPhone
By Paul Christensen
UPDATE: Sony has updated this clock radio with a new model - the ICF-C1PMK2 - which has even better AM reception, a brighter display, and official iPhone compatibility.Several weeks ago, I upgraded to a new 160GB iPod Classic. At the same time, I bought an XtremeMac Luna clock radio, which had good reviews. Unfortunately, I found that the Luna is incompatible with the new iPods - it cannot wake them from deep sleep to play the alarm in the morning. A call to XtremeMac got nothing more than a note that my issue had been forwarded to their technical team.Without any reviews, I took a chance, and ordered the Sony ICF-C1iP iPod clock radio, and am I glad I did! The Sony is fully compatible with my iPod Classic, and Sony includes instructions for using the iPhone as well. And, the sound quality and radio performance is remarkably better than the Luna or other iPod clock radios I've tested.Sony has done a great job with the ICF-C1iP. It is an upright design, with most of the unit behind the iPod, in a slanted design with controls at the top. The iPod dock accepts universal adapters, but they aren't really needed as Sony has an adjustable supporting plate behind the iPod.Unlike the Luna, which attempts to duplicate the iPod menus on its display, the Sony ICF-C1iP includes a remote control that lets you completely control the iPod menus as if you were manipulating the scroll wheel. Quite impressive.Sound quality is very good for a clock radio - with full bass and even midtones. Sony includes a simulated mode they call "Mega XPand" that in my experience made the music sound muddied and under-sampled. Your mileage my vary. The blue-backlit clock is located in the iPod dock area, and 3 brightness levels are available. In my experience, even the lowest setting is a bit too bright, but not enough to disturb me at night. I wish that the display were slightly larger, although the high contrast lets me see the time without my glasses from a reasonable distance. And, unlike most iPod clock radios, the radio reception is outstanding - with an external AM antenna provided. The unit has dual alarms, which can be set to iPod (you can even select a wakeup volume), Radio, or Buzzer. On the downside, the battery backup for the buzzer alarm and clock is a small expensive lithium battery. And, if your relying on just the buzzer to wake you up it's not very loud. You also have to be careful when changing the alarms to make sure that you don't accidentally turn the alarm off. But all of these are minor issues. However, these are all very minor issues that don't detract from the unit overall. All in all, in my experience, this is the best iPod clock radio you can buy.

Simple, Reliable iPod Clock Radio With One Annoying Drawback
By Brendan A. MacWade
I was looking for an iPod clock radio for over a year. My requirements were specific, which is why it took so long. It had to have the following:1. It had to be white in color.2. It had to have dual alarms, since my partner and I don't always go to work at the same time.3. It had to have decent sound quality. It didn't have to fill a room, but it had to be good enough to sound as good as desktop PC speakers or any other stereo clock radio costing $100.4. It had to have a snooze bar.5. It had to cost less than $150 including tax and shipping. Under $100 would be ideal.Clock radios that met these requirements were few. The first-generation XtremeMac IPD-LUN-00 Luna Alarm Clock Audio System and this Sony Clock Dock were immediately the front-runners.The first-generation Luna had chrome knobs on top of the unit, which always showed fingerprints. Also, the Luna radio tuner got poor reviews here at Amazon. Meanwhile the Sony had about the same audio quality, a better-reviewed radio tuner, and no silver buttons. So when MacXtreme released the second-generation Luna in black, with no white version offered, my decision was made for me.I like Sony products, and the Clock Dock is a good example of a Sony device. Being made in china, it doesn't quite have the solid feel that the Dream Machine clock radios of the 80s had. But it seems durable enough. But then I found an annoying problem - the display is too bright. The snooze bar is used to step the display through three brightness settings (low-med-high). But even the "low" setting is far too bright for a dark room. If you prefer to sleep in a dark room, with as little outdoor or indoor light as possible, this display will drive you nuts. Being a full-face "glow" display, it lights-up a room like a flashlight. I had to install a piece of fabric over the display to keep it covered most of the time (lifting the fabric only when I wanted to know the time). It is a poor solution, but given that I like all the other features, it is an improvised solution I can live with. Now if only Sony had add a fourth step in the display setting: OFF. They probably thought that would confuse users. But really, if this uniit had the option to turn off the blue-green glow in the display, the Sony Clock Dock would have been perfect. If you are looking for a quality, white, iPod clock radio and you DON'T need 2 alarms, then you have more choices. At the high end (over $300), the Tivoli iYiYi High-Fidelity iPod AM/FM Stereo System (White/Silver) is great, as is the Creative Labs Cambridge Large Radio with iPod Dock - White (CD745i). And in the more affordable range (under $100), the iHome iH6 Clock Radio for iPod (White) is very popular, as is the JBL On Stage II with RF RemoteI am happy with the Sony Clock Dock. I just wish it had the option to turn that display glow lamp OFF. One software feature. That's how close to 'perfect' this unit was.

Great product, nice features
By AmyDeeda76
I had previously purchased an iMode radio/dock to use as a simple dock and radio in my office. It seemed simple enough for my needs, but ultimately the iMode was clearly not well made, with static in the background of the radio all the time, and the clock repeatedly malfunctioned showing AM instead of PM, etc... So I returned it, did some more research and bought the Sony iPod Clock dock.I am very impressed with the Sony thus far! It is well designed, and shows Sony's experience with clock radios. It has both AM and FM radio, which some other docks don't have, and that was important to me. Neatest of all is that the remote fully controls the iPod when it is docked, meaning you can scroll through menus and change songs from across the room. The sounds is quite clear, and I am thoroughly pleased with my purchase. It is a great product for this price point.See also reviews on cNet which were very helpful and informative.
