Product Description
Any proud citizen of St. Louis will tell you their fair city financed the plane that Charles Lindbergh flew solo across the Atlantic. He took off from Roosevelt airfield in New York and made history 33 hours and 30 minutes later landing at Le Bourget Aerodome in Paris. He had this plane built to his specifications to make the journey and this hand-made model accurately represents the famous aircraft in many ways. Three extra fuel tanks obscured a direct front view. As you can see from this model the small windows on the front afforded Lindberg a front view only through a periscope. This design was needed for the most economical fuel consumption and weight distribution. Months of thought went into building the Spirit of St. Louis to ensure success.Look at the details of the burly 220-horsepower 9-cylinder Wright "Whirlwind" engine with a steel propeller. Lindbergh an experienced barnstormer and mail pilot between Kansas City and Chicago was a firm believer in only one engine. He thought multiple engines only increased the chance of failure. And this model shows the ingenuity of Lindberg as the customized Ryan M-2 has larger wings than other Ryan aircraft of this type. You can see the details of the cockpit when you look through the front and side windows too. The accuracy of the painted "Spirit of St. Louis" name and ID numbers on the canvas fabric is truly stirring. Order this plane and own a superb model of the most well-known aircraft that ever flew. Some minor assembly is required.About Authentic ModelsAuthentic Models strives to create and distribute a comprehensive collection of historic and fine art reproductions worldwide. This was a Christmas gift for my airplane-loving husband. In fact, he's the one who pointed it out and said he wanted it. This model did not disappoint. It arrived quickly, well-packaged. It is correct in every detail [the propeller spins!], sturdy [for a model] and attractive. Made in China, if that matters.
