4Pretty good, and fast
By Gigs
As has been noted elsewhere, this is specifically for 18.5 inch barrels. You *might* get away with a 20 inch barrel with a normal stock, but it would be tight. The box has 5 pushbuttons on the mechanical lock. You can program it with a code that uses each button only once, with the potential of requiring more than one button to be pressed at once.Being kind of a geek, I figured out the number of combinations possible. There are 930 possible combinations. I was going to put all the math here but it's kind of boring. The good part is that you could program it with say a 2+3 combination, that is two buttons at once plus the other three at once, and even though it's only two quick button presses, it's still secure (there are 100 possible 2+3 combinations). You can have this thing open in 5 seconds flat. The steel is heavy enough for a box of this size. It's not overly heavy, but the steel is not the weak point. The combination lock by itself leaves the box pretty prone to an attack with a pry bar. It's best to install this in a way that anyone who wanted to pry it open couldn't easily get leverage, that is, put the side that opens close to a wall or something. There are two additional ace locks that would help secure it if you wanted to have some additional security, but they would be no match if someone got leverage with a pry bar.In conclusion If you want kids or casual passers by not to tinker with your gun, yet still retain very quick access, this box is for you. It wouldn't stop someone determined to get the box open, but mounting it in a way that reduces the ability to get leverage would help slow them down a little bit.

5terrific for home defense short barrel shotguns
By G. Wheeler
My V-Line Industries 3842-SA Shotgun Case arrived quickly and in fine shape. It is extremely well designed and constructed - so will safely keep my grandchildren away from my gun. The entirely mechanical 4-pushbutton lock is sweet and works exactly as I hoped. It is extremely important to note that the longest gun this case will accept is an overall length of 40½ inches. Fortunately, my Remington 870 has a short "home protection" 18½-inch barrel - so has an overall length of only 38½-inches. I'm delighted, but please be sure to check the length of your gun carefully before ordering this little steel case. I say "little", because it will hold only two short shotguns like mine! But that's precisely what lets it fit behind a bedroom door or in one's closet!

2Lock malfunction and flimsy
By John Van Uden
I did quite a bit of research before buying this gun cabinet. I wanted a way to store my shotgun safely out of reach of kids and casual thieves but rapidly accessible to me if needed. The main problem with the item I received was that the locking mechanism didn't work. It basically didn't open. After many tries in different positions, I finally got it open once by opening it door-side-down. After that, I was never able to open it again. Yes, I was following the instructions and doing it correctly, and have no problem opening similar mechanisms in other products. I called V-Line customer support, who answered the phone right away and was very responsive, but couldn't help me solve the problem and determined that it must be either defective or damaged in transit. There was no visible damage to the packaging or cabinet. I sent it back to Amazon, which has a great no-hassel return policy. I was very happy with both V-Line and Amazon with regard to customer service. The second problem I have with this item is more subjective (ie you might not agree with me). I think it is not secure enough for its intended purpose. When I was fiddling with the door trying to get the lock to open, I could pry a corner slightly open with my fingers, without really trying very hard. I am sure that I could break into this cabinet if I wanted with either my bare hands and a little muscle or with some simple leverage like a screwdriver or a knife. No real tools required. It is closed at only 1 point along its long edge, without closures along the top or bottom, and it is just sheet metal, making it seem flimsy.Don't get me wrong, it will keep small children and casual guests out, and is better than nothing for sure, but calling it a safe is a stretch. It is a locking cabinet.
