5Excellent for cutting buried PVC in close quarters, from inside out!
By Nathaniel Allen
I saw this blade on the shelf locally, and bought it for my Dremel because (I think) it "looked cool to have." But at the time, I didn't really have a use for it. Most of my Dremel work is with metal bike cable housing and drywall, not much wood work.So in my Dremel case this sharp little bit sat for... well, probably for a few years.Until recently. I've had three separate instances where I've needed to cut plastic and PVC pipe that's already buried, and this Gyros wheel was the answer. The first two instances involved a pair of 4" PVC risers extending up from a subsurface foundation drain that I needed to cut precisely to join with the fittings I was using to connect a cleanout cover that was to sit flush with the yet-to-be-poured concrete walkway. This meant I needed to trim the PVC about 8 to 10 inches below grade, and the pipes were already buried vertically extending into about 6 feet of soil where they connected with a lateral line.Using this blade, my Dremel and the flex shaft, I was able to reach inside, make very straight and clean cuts, remove the remains, and clean out just enough room to make my connections. If I trimmed this in a traditional manner, it would have been a bit of digging to expose the pipes, plus enough room for my saw, not to mention the hassle of the two pipes being side by side AND up against the concrete foundation wall. This blade made the cuts a 60 second job, and nearly eliminated any dirt removal. The third occasion involved trimming back a 2" PVC sleeve I buried that was shielding an already live 3/4" PVC water line. This blade allowed me to pretty easily trim some excess length off of the sleeve with little concern for nicking the water line, causing a leak.Very happy to have this gem in my Dremel toolbox.
