First off I would like to say that I have recommended this tripod to pretty much everyone since using it. A good tripod makes a huge difference. I am an outdoor / landscape photographer so I will review how this has performed in that light. I have previously used cheap tripods from big box electronics stores and while light they just don't cut it. Too flimsy, they never get low enough and break easy. I ended up buying a set of Manfrotto 190XB legs with a Giottos MH-1000/652 ball head. I used that setup for about a year and was pretty happy with it. I noticed two things however, 1) while ballheads are more common right now it wasn't for me. I like being able to frame precisely and and it was hard to move only one axis at a time with a ballhead. 2) the 190XB while light and compact were at times alittle hard to get low and weren't quite tall enough for me. I'm 5'9 and they would not get to my eye level unless I extended the center column. I saw this combo on amazon and quickly read up reviews on various websites. A friend of mine has the 055XPROB legs and I've been envious since the 1st time I saw them in action. I found mostly solid reviews of the head too with one exception, the quick release lever. I broke down and bought this setup anyway and absolutely love it. Now for the details.PROS: This thing is SOLID! The legs are nice and rigid, the 3way head locks down tight and the quick release plate has no play. no wiggle, no worries. This tripod is over my eye level with legs extended but center column dropped and can get to just about ground level. (the legs not only extended but can be swung out in 4 positions up to 90º, on top of that the PROB models of Manfrotto legs have a center column that will extend up then rotate horizontal allowing you to get really low.) there is spirit levels and bubble levels everywhere which is nice. 2 of the legs have foam wrapped on them, its nice when it's cold or when carrying it on your shoulder. The quick release on the legs work well and the whole things can be taken apart easily, cleaned, adjusted and replaced if need be.CONS: Well the only negative thing I get you can say about this is size/weight. It's really not as bad as some other pods around but its not small. The 3way head was much bigger that I thought it would be but, stability comes at a price and I'd rather have a great tripod. I have not had an issue with the quick release lever. I don't think I will. My biggest complaint is the quick release plate, it's huge. I have a Canon 50D with grip and the plate is slightly wider than the grip and half the length, it's relatively thin but I don't like hand holding vertical with this attached. It also is alittle over-kill when you have a lens with a tripod collar and an extra plate attached to that. But it's a small price to pay for such a good package.Bottom Line: I'm sorry I'm not the best at reviewing things but heres my take. If you need something that will configure itself for unusual and varying environments, this fits the bill. I have no worries taking 30+ second exposures because this is so solid. I wish I had saved up some extra money and purchased this off the bat. If you're looking at the 109XB or 055XB you will want this center column at some point. It really is worth it. I just don't see a better deal without spending more than double the price.

The product arrived as advertised and promised; on time and working beautifully. The packaging was more than adequate. The tripod seemed a little heavy at first but I soon realized this baby could withstand some major abuse. Sound familiar? What else can I say? It's a tripod!

This item was received through Amazon.com damaged two times in a row. The problem is that as a 'packaged deal' the tripod is assembled to the tripod head and placed into a single box. The adjustment handles of the head are removed to save space, but a plastic end cap is left holding the axis of the head together. Twice now I've received a tripod head where the plastic piece has broken off leaving the tripod unusable. Without the plastic end cap, the tripod axis can fall off when loosened to adjust. Not good considering the $$$$$ that will be sitting on it!Aside from issues with the tripod head being damaged, the tripod itself seems solid! Maybe I should go through Manfrotto directly? Fool me twice Amazon!
