By J. Miller
The Zoom G1x guitar effects pedal include practically every standard guitar effect you could want. That's both a plus and a minus.Because it can do so much, the G1x is complicated to customize. Multiple effect options can be layered into a preset to mimic just about any guitar tone you've ever heard. In fact, out of the box programming will have your guitar sounding like a wide range of popular guitarist with the touch of a button. The G1x includes wah, reverb, termolo and phaser effects with almost unlimited variations to each. It also includes a built-in tuner allowing you to stay in tune without unplugging. Plus, it's expression pedal allows you to vary aspects of your preset (e. g. volume or wah), while playing.Where the unit stumbles is when you want to find your own tone. Because there are so many potential effects and they must be programmed in certain orders, it can be hard to know where to start. One method is to take a preset close to the sound you want and modify aspects of it. However, it can be hard to know which effect you're working on and how to change it to get what you're after. The interplay between effects can cause the changes you make to be truly strange. All in all, this is a fine and low cost entree to guitar effects. I've played with it quite a bit and enjoy it, but would nejoy it more if it were easier to work with.

By DB0
The G1x is superceded by the new G1xn. The presests are all different between the two units, but a few have a certain similarity of sound. Although it's a matter of taste, I think that I like the presets better for the G1x over those of the G1xn. The G1x tends more toward classic guitar heros, whereas the G1xn presets tend to be more modern. But, both units cover the range from Beatles to Metallica to some extent. The main improvment in the G1xn is that they added an internal power switch, so that the power is off when the instrument is not plugged into the unit. With the older G1x, power is always on when the power adapter is attached.
