The Keeley 4 Knob is one of the top 3 pedal compressors you should check out if you are in the market. The 4 knob version allows for extensive control over compression settings, making it perfect for the finger picker looking to even out his/her dynamics or the lead player looking for endless sustain. It does add a bit of brightness and hiss/noise once you really start cranking up the sustain/level as do most compressors, however when set to more moderate settings, it's tough to tell that you are using an effect. The pedal does not alter the sound of your tone when bypassed and it does a nice job at keeping your original tone in tact while on. The Level control comes in very handy if you are using this for leads. Keep it cranked up if you want to have your compressed signal boosted to help you stick out in the mix when it comes time to solo. It is also fantastic on basses with both active and passive electronics. These pedals are built incredibly well and out of high grade components so they can handle years worth or tour/abuse.I rate this a 5 star product as it delivers what it promises, is built incredibly well and sounds fantastic. Yes, there are less expensive compressors on the market but none that sound as nice!

By J. Walter Burch
I spent a few weeks researching compressor pedals. I kept coming back to the Keely, both 4 and 2 knob versions. As well as many cheaper models, that are doubtlessly good if you want more coloration from a compressor. Ultimately I choose the Keely C4 model and I couldn't be happier with it. It can be used subtlety to boost a signal, smooth out dynamic issues on pretty much any instrument you throw at it. Naturally it excels with guitar, but I've used it in the last few weeks my synths (both analog and digital) as well as other line level sources. I may even try it on vox.The extra two knobs, Attack and Clipping, are well worth it IMO. The attack setting allows you to adjust when the compressor sets in, on the fly. Really useful to have conveniently on top. It can keep natural a lot of dynamics or conversely squash them to bits. The Clipping control is allow very handy on top, rather than in the box. It colors the signal in an awesome, but not over powering way. Nonetheless, the C4 holds it's own just using the two main controls: Sustain and Level. You have a lot of options with those two knobs alone. Turn down sustain, boost the level and you have greater apparent volume, oftentimes what most people seek in a compressor that doesn't color the tone too much. The sustain knob does what it says it does and it does it well.I usually plug my Gibson Les Paul into the C4, with low sustain, high level, mid attack and clipping gain to taste. From there it goes into one of my distortion units, usually a Sovtek Big Muff or directly into my amp's tube preamp; I have a Mullard, NOS - new old stock in there. The C4 smooths out unwieldy textures whenever I need to get a backing track of heavily distorted rhythm guitars. I also use it on lead to tame the dynamics to a level that is a good balance between modern compression and more dynamic range. You can easily program this thing to sound old school or very intense.I probably wouldn't have swung for $250, but I had gift certificates to bring it down to around $100 (a definite steal!). Now that I know what this unit capable of in my setup, I'd save up a bit more and pass lesser models behind. It's really that good.

This pedal was a great addition to my setup. It has added the clarity and dynamics that I was searching for. The 2 additional knobs (attack and clipping) are great for fine tuning the attack/decay of your sound.
