arguably Damascus steel has not existed since about 1750 when then original technique was lost. However this is a very impressive blade. It has all the hallmarks of "Damascus" forge technique though I am not a metallurgist. Out of the box it is sharp enough to draw blood with no effort (a bandaged finger proves that). Because the blade was oiled and bagged in a plastic bag It had mild "varnishing" which is easily removed with a solvent. WEAR GLOVES when doing so. There are no instructions whatsoever, so look it up on you tube if you don't know what you are doing when assembling this thing. The tolerances are very tight and once assembled it is a sight to behold. Understandably heavy two handed weapon that I have little doubt would slice bone and sinew without slowing down. Two passes with ceramic v sharpener made the edge glow. Impressive array of accessories also without instructions. Tsubas are high quality and once it is pinned together nothing is loose or feels iffy. One minus is the sukamaki wrap which feels like cotton, the blade deserves ray skin, but for the money I can't be too picky...
