4BD-UP5000 good and bad
By Kevin Windrem
I picked up a BD-UP5000 when limited quantities appeared in mid December 2007 and have been quite happy with the unit. It's my first venture into HD disc playback and having a single box to play all DVD formats was essential. This player delivers excellent picture and sound quality (including exceptional SD DVD upscaling). Less than 10% of HD DVD and Blu-Ray titles have only a TrueHD track which will output as 2-channel stereo. Most discs have other tracks that can be selected: Dolby Digital, multichannel PCM, DTS, etc. So lack of multichannel TrueHD isn't as big an issue as it may seem. Still even one title that limits you to 2.0 is frustrating. Lockups and strange behavior when loading and playing some discs is frustrating, but from what I've read most players go through growing pains and the content providers are at least part of the problem because they can influence the way the player behaves with custom menus and features. The 5000 has a Silicon Optix Reon running HQV SD upconversion. SD DVD quality is amazing. You need HDMI/HDCP video as the analog components are limited to 480p based on licensing constraints. The HDMI output supports 1080p60 and 1080p24 as well as other more common rates. 1080p24 is noteworthy since it sends a film to the display at it's native frame rate of 24 frames per second without introducing a 3:2 pull-down sequence. However, the display must be capable of receiving 1080p24 AND have a refresh rate of 72 or 120 Hz to completely eliminate motion "judder".The 5000 will decode Dolby Digital and DTS encoded sound tracks to multichannel PCM and ship them out via HDMI. Or the player can be placed in "audiophile" mode which sends the undecoded bitstream to the receiver for decoding there, again via HDMI. Some audio tracks can be sent to the receiver via S/PDIF optical or coax connections, but not the higher bandwidth tracks such as multichannel PCM. You must have HDMI for those or use the 7.1 analog outs. The "reencode" mode converts all audio formats to DTS, allowing you to get multichannel audio to your receiver via S/PDIF optical/coax if HDMI isn't an option. The 5000 has had a rocky start and is still somewhat unstable and lacks key features. While it was announced the first part of 2007, it didn't ship until mid December 2007. Many of the disc compatibility problems have been fixed by a firmware update released in mid January 2007, but there are still some discs that have problems. The 5000 suffers from random lockups requiring a power cycle and lacks support for the advanced audio formats: Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD HR/MA. In addition, standard definition discs are always stretched to 16:9 even for 4:3 content. Most TVs and displays can't unstretch the image without reducing the size as well.A Samsung engineer working on this product indicated they are aware of the problems and missing multichannel audio support. He said they are planning a major firmware update in the May 2008 time frame. Speculation at AVS Forum (the 5000's user thread is 3000+ plus posts!!!) is that Samsung relies on Broadcom to supply DSP firmware, so it may really Broadcom we're waiting for. This makes sense since the BH200 has the same audio format limitations and uses the same chip. Firmware updates can be done via an ethernet connection to the 5000, or you can download an ISO CD image from Samsung's web site and burn an undated disc from any PC or Mac. (Mac update procedures are not documented but work fine: use Disk Utility or Toast Disc Copy to burn the image file; do not use Finder's burn mechanism.)Samsung announced the BD-UP5500 at CES January 2008 with availability in the May 2008 time frame. The 5500 is not a true replacement for the 5000 since it does not have the Reon upconverter, nor does it have multichannel analog outputs. Price should be lower than the 5000. This might be an option for some, but the lack of the Reon/HQV is a big deal for me since there are many more SD DVDs than Blu-Ray and HD DVD combined. Those that have a separate audio processor may also need the multichannel analog audio outputs. The 5000's true replacement will be the BD-UP6500 due out late in 2008.Blu-Ray Java and HDi allow content providers to "enhance" the viewing experience with additional material on the disc and/or downloaded from the internet. Personally, I just want to watch the movie as the producer/director intended. The 5000 is currently Blu-Ray BDJ 1.0 with a promise for 1.1. The 5500 will have to be BDJ 1.1 based on Blu-Ray specs/timetable. The 5000 (and 5500) will never be BDJ 2.0. The 6500 should be BDJ 2.0. The 5000 is supposed to support HDi but haven't tried it.If you want a single box solution that can play most of the HD DVD, Blu-Ray and SD DVD discs, and can live with the limitations at least until firmware updates are available, the BD-UP5000 is worth serious consideration.Your only other choice is the LG BH200, but it doesn't have the Reon HQV upconversion or multichannel analog audio outputs. Other than that, the 5000 and BH200 have essentially identical features with similar prices: $750 for the BH200 on Amazon, currently. However, if you need onboard decoding or bitstreams of Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD MA, Blu-Ray and HD DVD playback and can't wait for firmware updates, you'll need to look for separate Blu-Ray and HD DVD players.

3Good Effort-Still a Work in Progress
By Christopher J. Keesing
Credit is due Samsung (and LG, for that matter) in trying to resolve the HDM format war with universal players. The 5000K, lacks full HD audio codecs implementation. Playback on a limited number of High Definition media was impressive, although compatability problems have been noted for discs of both types by other owners. If you currently have of library of both types, this model is worthy of consideration, although with Warner's recent declaration of going Blu-Ray only, HD DVDs will likely become increasingly rare. SD playback is troubling with respect to multiple audio drop-outs.Details as follows:Mine is a Dec 07 build. I'm using HDMI through-out. Based on a day and half's use, Set-up was straight forward (to an Integra DTC 9.8)and Sony SXRD XBR2 LCoS set. Performance is as follows:-HD DVD (1 tested) Fast loading, full menu navigation, excellent sound and picture. No stoppages-Blu-Ray (1 tested) Fast loading, full menu navigation, excellent sound and picture. No stoppagesThe tested discs do not include those noted as having play-problems (e.g. 3:10 to Yuma, Star Trek OS, etc.)Mitigation:Samsung has issued one firmware release with another reportedly in the works in the immediate term to deal with various playback issues. A longer term upgrade to handle the advanced Audio Codecs activation may be issued in May 08. Samsung's responsiveness to the problems has been rather halting with various parties getting different answers from customer support. (See AVS Forum for details). The Samsung website currently has only limited information.-SD DVDs (5 discs tested--personally owned and Netflix rentals): Excellent picture quality, but multiple short audio drop-outs on all tested media, which do not appear to be at the chapter stops as some have thought and are not always repeatable.Although I have a dedicated player (Oppo 980) for SD playback, this is a noteworthy defect, especially if you are intending the 5000k as a one stop solution for DVD playback irrespective of media.-CD playback (3 discs tested): Mid range distortion on one one of three. Not a deal breaker, but again somewhat disturbing that there is a defect in this application as well.Overall, this is a workman-like product, which, if Samsung follows through with firmware updates can be improved considerably. With the format war appearing to tilt in favor of Blu-Ray, the 5000k may become a niche product, chiefly for those with extant libraries of both media types and carries a premium price.

1Warning! Dolby TrueHD Only 2 Channel on bd-up5000
By J. S. Johnson
Warning! This thing is not Dolby TrueHD multi-channel capable. They are using the fine print specifications of Dolby TrueHD to deliver a product that is, in my opinion, of inferior quality when it comes to home theater. The samsung bd-up5000 only plays 2 channels in Dolby TrueHD.The user manual states in the fine print "When playing a dolby TrueHD disc, audio will only be heard over the front left and right speakers".I also called Samsung support about this. After being kept on hold and disconnected several times... they confirmed that this unit will only play 2 channel TrueHD.The level 2 technician at samsung kept telling me that Dolby TrueHD only requires a minimum of 2 channels for the specs and kept telling me to read about it on the Dolby website. The samsung technician also told me that they have no plans on issuing a "fix" to make the samsung bd-up5000 thing multi channel for TrueHD.I just upgraded my amplifier so I could accept a multi-channel Dolby TrueHD signal and I ordered the samsung bd-up5000 because it is advertised as having dolby TrueHD.The samsung hd duo bd-up5000 isn't multi-channel Dolby TrueHD compatible... at least not if you ask anyone who expects to hear their home theater in "surround sound".Not much surround sound to hear from a unit that only outputs 2 channels of Dolby TrueHD.I am truly disappointed with Samsung.

5Tal vez el mejor de todos los productos de conservas de cefalópodos / Perhaps the best of all tinned cephalopod products
By Jonathan Green
Todos hemos sido defraudados por sub-estándar conservas pulpo. Este producto no romper tu corazón! El pulpo es todo lo que uno puede desear en ocho - armados meriendas y la salsa de ajo picante es una delicia. Magnífica! We've all been let down by sub-standard tinned octopus. This product will not break your heart! The octopus are all that one could want in eight-limbed snacks and the garlic sauce is a piquant delight. Superb!

5Best gift for a smoker in your life
By Trenton Talbot
This is the best lighter I've ever had. And I had them all: Duponts, Zippo Blues (which tops my "worst turbo ever" nomination), Colibris.. You name it.I own a smooth briar version, this one differs only in finish.First thing you notice when you take that lighter in your hand.. Posh. Well, it feels like a handholdable Bentley. Incredible quality. Amazingly solid. Solid brass, no plating. Natural briar. Very clever design to satisfy pipe, cigar and cigarette smokers alike. I've had it for ages and never needed any repairs or adjustments. It lits every time, not a single misfire - I've never experienced this with any other lighter. It doesn't leak gas at all. What else could I say?! This is one of those things you should include in your living will. It will last many generations. Perhaps this is the best possible gift for a smoker in your life :)A few words about care. Briar - same as your pipe (waxed pipe wipes will do, carnauba wax for advanced users). I treat my briar about once a year. Brass parts - when the "fire" side of your lighter gets greasy (depends on a gas you use, I recommend Colibri), wipe it off with some rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip. That's enough to make your Old Boy pretty much immortal....and speaking of flints, Zippos will do just fine (if you don't mind occasional fireworks in your pipe).

5corona old boy
By trc
Although it took a while to receive this item, it was well worth the wait. This is the lighter that I have been looking for. It is built like a tank, looks like a million bucks, and lights EVERY time. I have owned and used zippo, colibri, and a few other lighters in the past, but none worked every time. Zippo lighters give a large flame that almost always lights, but the fuel drys out fairly quickly and it gives off a taste when smoking. My colibri pipe lighter holds fuel better, but it is not as reliable of a flame, and it does not add a flavor to your smoke the way that a zippo can. The corona old boy is bad ass. It has never failed to light, it holds fuel better than any other butane lighter that I have, and it has great and easy to operate features. There is a built in pipe tool for smoking a pipe and it doubles as a tool to control your flame size and refilling you lighter. The flame is sweet every time, consistent, easy to adjust, and it does not give off a taste when smoking. It is like things should be you get what you pay for. That's not always the case, but it is with this lighter.

4Never ending Vienna
By Marc B. Willis
I am not going to give a lot of detail on the taste, its a Vienna sausage. It tasted good but you will either like it or not. I would dip mine in BBQ sauce and I dropped a few in marinara sauce. I will comment on the amount you get. A BUNCH! I MEAN A WHOLE BUNCH! If you are having a party or something go with these you get plenty and they can be dressed up or left as is. ENJOY!

5What a great find!
By Ghenghis
Big fan of Goya, more often I'm seeing a bigger variety of their productson the shelves at the local market.Bottom line, I like these much more than Armour and waaaaay more than Libby's.They are light and IMO more flavorful. They take to any kind of hot sauce orBBQ sauce, and make a saltine cracker worth of royalty. And the best part, thesewere priced at $0.79 a can. What??? Thats a deal in any language. Pick up someSardines in Tomato Sauce while you're at it, they're almost as good.BTW, Goya has been around for over 80 years, and as far as I can tell is the world'slargest producer of Spanish/Mexican/Caribbean foods around. Don't know what Viennasausages have to do with all that, but I'm happy it is! 5 Crackers

4A big improvement over the MB-D200
By Gerald Khoo
When using the MB-D10 with the D300, you will find that it is a great improvement from the MB-D200 (the D200 vertical grip). For one, it is made of magnesium alloy, and is much sturdier. It is also weather sealed like the D300 body. It fits nicely and firmly with the D300. It also has an additional multi selector, which is a great added feature. The MS-D10 (holder for AA batteries) also comes in a very nice pouch. Of course with such improvement comes the price increase as well!If you want to achieve 8fps on your D300, you can use the EN-EL4/a battery with your MB-D10 or AA batteries (8 pieces). The ability to use AA batteries is a real plus point. Imagine having a long trip where you may not have access to charge your EN-EL3e batteries. Having the ability to use AA batteries means that you can carry a bunch of them and still be able to shoot... even deep in the wilderness.Another advantage of the MB-D10 is that it is not L-shaped, which means that you can easily slip it into your camera bag and pull it out when you need it. To mount the grip, you do not need to remove the battery from your camera and marry the grip to the camera as how the D200+MB-D200 was designed to. It does not take as much space and not as awkward as grips that are L-shaped. This is a versatility of the MB-D10, but also has some getting used to.Here are some areas which either you like or hate or take some getting use to:1. The battery in the camera need not be removed to use the grip. So for those who leave the grip on all the time and want to use 2 batteries at a time, it would mean that you would need to remove the grip each time you want to remove the battery in the camera. It would be nice to be able to swap both batteries without having to remove the grip, but the design is such and we would have to live with it. What I've decided to do is to remove the battery in the camera and just use the one in the MB-D10. Besides, you can get a lot more shots with the D300 than the D200 for the same battery charge.2. The shutter release button on the MB-D10 is a bit too sensitive, which means that you can quite easily trigger the shot. The sensitivity between the shutter-release button on the camera and the grip is different, so when switching orientation of the camera, you'll need to be aware of the sensitivity so that you do not accidentally take a shot which you did not mean to do so.3. The MB-D10 can take the EN-EL4/a battery. However, the battery chamber cover for the EN-EL4/a is not part of the package, and you would need to purchase it separately. The battery chamber cover is BL-3.

5Big, heavy, functional, manly
By Daniel A. Koblosh
May 2012 UPDATE:I agree with others here that the shutter release button is too sensitive. In fact, it sometimes seems to fire multiple exposures uncommanded. Press the release, several exposures. Strange. And I never did get used to regripping the camera after turning it vertical. So I don't really use the extra set of controls at all. It's also somewhat of a pain to get to the first battery that's still inside the camera to charge it. It really would have been better to be able to fit two batteries into this external grip so I could slide the tray out and charge both batteries without having to unscrew the grip. This really comes into play when tripod mounted or in some other rig.Original review:The MB-D10 is really nice.Battery Options:It comes with two battery trays: one holds an EN-EL3e 7.4v 1500mAh lith-ion battery (same as what the camera holds). The other tray takes eight, AA batteries. Depending on which AA cells you install (Ni-MH, lithium, Ni-MN or alkaline) you can have 9.6 (NiMH at 2500mAh or more) or 12 volts. That voltage can crank the motor to its rated limit of 8 fps...at least until the buffer fills up and its frame rate slows while it writes to the card. You also tell the D300 via the menu which type of battery you have installed. It keeps track of charge for you based on the type. Very smart. The gray EN-EL3e is an update to the D70's black EN-EL3. The EN-EL3e can power the D70 but the older D70 batteries cannot power the D300. That's because the newer EN-EL3e has three contacts on it as opposed to the EN-EL3's two contacts. That extra contact allows the D300 to track the entire life of the EN-EL3e. Interestingly, the D70's older MH-18 charger can charge the newer EN-EL3e as can the D300's newer MH-18a charger. With an EN-EL3e in the camera body and another in the MB-D10, the D300 tracks and remembers how many shots you've taken on each battery, its percentage of charge remaining and even how many times the battery has been charged. When the battery as reached its design limit for recharges (years from now) the D300 will tell you.The grip will also take the larger 11.1v/1900mAh EN-EL4 or EN-EL4a battery [...]but you have to buy a BL-3 cover, which is really just the end of the battery trays mentioned above but without the tray. The cover clips to the end of the EN-EL4 and has a twist lock to hold and seal it into the MB-D10. [...]I bought the MB-D10 because I had purchased a second EN-EL3e knowing full well I'd probably never use it. (My second D70 battery was rarely used because one battery powered the thing about forever.) So, to get some use out of my second D300 battery, I don't leave it in the camera bag...I carry it on the camera as a built-in backup battery. The D300 also allows you to pick which battery you want to use first: the one in the MB-D10 or the one in the camera. I tend to use the MB-D10 battery because it's easier to remove for charging. You have to unscrew the MB-D10 from the D300 to get the internal EN-EL3e out of the camera body. But even then the large thumb wheel allows quick and easy removal. There is a solid rubber L-shaped plug on the camera body's bottom that protects the multiple contacts between camera and MB-D10. That plug stores in a special area on the MB-D10 so you won't lose it. And if you remove the MB-D10 for some reason to use the camera without the MB-D10, you can plug up the contacts on the camera immediately.Controls:The MB-D10 has a complete alternate set of controls on it for when you are shooting verticals: an end-mounted focus/release button with lock ring to prevent accidentally hitting it; an AF-ON button; Master (rear) and Secondary (front) selector wheels for changing program and other functions; and a four-way selector/navigation switch. It's a lot more than a battery back. The same controls your forefinger and thumb access when holding the camera horizontally are there when holding the camera vertically. And it really is more comfortable to hold vertically this way, even though you do have to get used to regripping the camera. I've shot verticals for so many years I'm still getting used to holding the camera in such a foreign way.The MB-D10 fits the D300 like it was molded in one piece: seamless and very ergonomic. It makes the camera quite large and much heavier, but it has a solid feel and for sure I'm not going to run low on power. It's also comforting to know I can buy some AA's anywhere in the world and be able to keep shooting should the EN-EL3e's not have available power for recharging. It's also nice to crank the camera to max frame rate if needed. Some say it also helps balance the camera when you have a really large lens on a tripod. And it's just so...manly. Point-and-shoots are cute and handy but this thing really dresses up the D300 in a useful manner, adds performance and extends power enough for any conceivable assignment. And in a crisis, you can swing the thing like a mace. It probably would not break even then....

5Revolutionary
By Ben Stein
The battery grip to the D200 and D80 felt flimsy. They also only provided a vertical grip and an extra battery. You needed to take off the battery door and screw it on, continuously for the contacts sometimes did not connect. This grip on the other hand is made out of metal and rubber, just like the D300 and has the same feel to it. It gives the body a more D2h feel, something canon shooters with a 40d often complain about. The grip with the high capacity D3 and earlier pro model battery gives the D300 the ability to shooter for hours on end and at 8fps. This grip feels much less like an accessory than as a part of the body. It may look expensive compared to the D200 grip, but worth it.

5Good Vienna Sausages But Not As Described
By R. Thomasson
Goya Vienna Sausage Hot Sauce, 5-Ounce Units (Pack of 48)are good. They have a good texture and that distinctive Vienna Sausage Flavor with a slight "bite" of jalapeno. These are not packed in hot sauce. They come packed in chicken broth. The "hot" flavor is part of the meat mix.

5Quality equals Weight
By James
Big lenses are not for everyone. Heavy, long and somewhat cumbersome to protect and care for while in the field - all that goes away once you're set up and feel the glee of the auto focus homing in on the target. After struggling with manual focus long lenses for decades, with no VR capability, it's hard to express how the combination of auto focus and vibration reduction drastically improve one's ratio of usable and pleasing images.Expensive - youbetcha! Whether or not it's worth it depends upon the degree of your passion. I saved every penny for almost ten years to replace my Nikon 500mm manual focus with the 600mm f4 AF VR. Satisfaction is measured by the amazing percentage of in focus shots on fast moving subjects. For what it's worth, I tried a couple after market brands for less money, but after trying them out for a day, returned them. The Nikon 600mm does exactly what it is supposed to do. A step up for sure.Note: Wouldn't hurt to work out with barbells at the gym for at least a month before you take delivery.

5For wildlife photography, this is your 'Cadillac'.
By Ultrarider7
As an addendum to my review of a year ago, I now own this lens and can say that it is the best lens I own. Fantastic! Excellent results, even with the 1.4x teleconverter.Incredible images. Comparing this lens to my other telephoto lenses, is like comparing a Cadillac to a Chevy. Owning this lens for someone who shoots wildlife is a dream come true.My only experience with this lens is a 5 day period that I rented it. Having said that, I now have set a goal of purchasing this lens within this year. Before getting this lens in my hands, I thought I would be able to handhold shots using image stabilization. While this is possible, to get the full use from this lens a high quality tripod or at least a monopod is really a must. I have found this lens is just too big to be handheld on any long term photo shoot. My arms literally ached after a day of shooting eagles along Lake Pepin. And you will be noticed. I was glad that the others watching and photographing the eagles were merely curious. This lens attacks a lot of attention, potentially good or bad! Everyone is interested in it, how heavy, how much does it cost and of course, the quality of the images you obtain. The results speak for themselves. I posted a few of the several hundred shots made with this lens. The clarity, sharpness, color and bokeh are superb! If you have 10 grand burning a hole in your pocket, this is probably your best investment!

5Best in the business
By Lullu
This is the best lens I have come across. I use with with my Nikon D300 on a Wimberly head + Gitzo tripod. I get sharp images of wild life and birds. I am trying to put this to good use for my Lunar Astrophotography and this does an awesome job. The Autofocus works well even with the 2X teleconverter, which is quite handy during a rough safari ride.Strongly recommended for any serious nature / wild life photographer.

5Consider yourself warned!
By Noirist
Optically, this lens is without peer. But if you haven't seen it in person, it's shockingly big and heavy. Much of the weight is at the end of the lens away from the camera, which makes it difficult to hand hold this lens stably. I have no trouble hand holding the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens on a D3s all day long, but I was unable to hold this lens steady enough long enough to even engage the autofocus on a designated subject. The Nikon 300mm f2.8 is the largest lens that I can effectively hand hold. So unless you bench over 200 lbs, I'd recommend that you plan on mounting this lens on a monopod or a high-end tripod with gimble head.

5This is the best of the best...
By BigToe
I am an avid bird photographer, using a 300mm F/4 nikon with TC-14E II. I had been thinking about upgrading to the 300mm f/2.8, but since I always shoot on a tripod, I decided to go one bigger, and get the 400mm f/2.8. This is a HUGE lens. As already mentioned, don't even think about shooting this thing handheld. I use it with a Jobu pro2 Gimbal, and it is literally weightless. As for the optics, going from the 300mm f/4...it's like taking a veil off the lens. The sharpness at f/2.8 rivals f/8 on the 300mm, and by f/3.5, it is razor sharp. Furthermore, the colors are amazing! With the 300mm, I still had to bump up the saturation in post, but with the 400mm, the colors are rich and saturated out of the box.Pairing the 400mm with a TC-14e II (560mm f/4) is still usably sharp at f/4, and by f/5.6 is, razor sharp. Colors are still eye popping as well. Autofocusing is a bit slower, but still quite usable. There's a reason why the super teles cost so much...no compromising here. This is the best of the best.

5Amazingly Sharp - though big and bulky
By J. P. Rutt
We recently acquired this product after reading and pondering the Amazon reviews and other reviews. Overall our experience is near the consensus: this is one very fine piece of glass, but you can't imagine how big and bulky it is until you have it out of its case and start to use. As others have said, think of this as a tripod or at least monopod lens only.... but with that caveat you will be amazed at the images you can make!

5On time and as described
By Nanette
I wanted to try frijoles canarios because I have many Peruvian friends and love Peruvian food. I shared a few bags of beans with my friend who is teaching me to cook different Peruvian dishes, and she said they were very good and fresh. My family likes them too. Cook with garlic, onion, tomato and a little oregano.

5Amazing Watch
By Leon M. Bodevin
This watch looks like it's worth many times its $1K pricetag. Everything about this watch says quality. The leather strap is very thick and looks like it is worth $100 just by itself. The watch has a lot of heft to it and has a nice size face. The valjoux 7750 movement (which another reviewer mentioned) is used in almost all Swiss chronographs and is considered to be a durable, workhorse automatic movement. Most of the watches that use this movement (such as Breitling) sell for thousands more than this watch. Only problem with this watch is that all your other watches will pale in comparison to it. I never want to wear any of my other watches these days.Surprised to find that some reviewers had a bad experience with this watch. If you look on the watch forums online you will find that this watch is considered to be the gold standard for affordable Swiss chronographs. This may be the kind of watch that you should purchase from a jeweler (I bought mine at Kay Jewelry) so that the salesperson can explain to you exactly what you are buying.

5A wonderful watch
By Pradeep Prakash
I actually bought this at an AD, but nevertheless here's a small review:The dial itself is very unique and believe me the 2 silver sub dials make a big difference in the way this looks. A 44MM case is rather imposing but doesnt look monstrous. The day-date feature for me, however could have been a bit avoidable. I would have been comfortable with just the date. I have many watches and rarely wear the same watch on 2 days back to back. What this means is that the watch stops after the 40 hour power-reserve (which I havent tested yet) and then its back to manually starting it again and changing both the day and date with the am/pm becomes a chore - I know the solution to this is a watch winder, but I havent gotten around to getting one yet. I dont use the pilots crowns for complicated measurements at all (neither do most other users that I have seen reviews of), but this sure looks cool. The movement itself, the Valjoux 7750 is quite a durable movement and Breitlings who have an improvised inhouse modded version of this movement use it in their watches that sell for several times more - so this is what Hamilton provides at such an affordable price. I now find the concept of batteries in watches, strangely a bit turn-offish.The watch has such an amazing 'buddy' personality and class that somehow just feels right and not over-done. Even my tags, omegas and breitlings havent quite given me this feeling. However, with automatics, its important to periodically get these serviced - once every 5 years or so. I only had one bad experience (I have had 2 khaki X winds) - the first watch I got - the day and date plates kept jamming - since this was under warranty I got another one and then realized that you are never meant to change either the day or date field between 8PM and 3AM - reason is that around this time, the gears that control the day/date change are in motion and to manually try and change this field, affects the gears and hence the functionality in the long run. The strap is also uber-thick, but not in a gross way. The white stitching and the 2 rivets only add to the vintage/timeless allure of the product.Go ahead, spend the money and enjoy this lovely product for decades to come.

5A lot of watch. . .
By David Ellis
. . .For the price, unbeatable. With three screwdown crowns and three rotating bezels (two internal, one external),this is simply more watch than most people will ever use (or understand). The extra features built into the X-wind models allow a pilot to calculate speed and wind data into a flight plan. That being said, you will not find many other sporty Swiss made chronographs of this caliber costing less than two to four times as much. The build quality, design and finish work are all first rate with a number of classic details that manage to combine into a most unique package.
